US COURT RULES THAT AI-GENERATED WORKS CANNOT BE GRANTED COPYRIGHT PROTECTION
On 18 August, 2023, the US District Court for the District of Columbia, in the case of Stephen Thaler v. Shira Perlmutter and The United States Copyright Office, ruled that AI-generated works do not qualify for copyright protection. The case arose as a challenge to the USCO’s denial of Dr. Stephen Thaler’s application for copyright protection of a work that was entirely created using generative AI. The court held that, “human authorship is a bedrock requirement of copyright” and that devoid of this human involvement, an AI-generated piece of work cannot claim copyright protection.
MEDIATEK PARTNERS WITH META’S LLAMA 2
Semiconductor giant MediaTek has announced on 23 August, 2023, that they would be working closely with Meta’s Llama 2. Llama is Meta’s next-generation open-source Large Language Model (LLM). MediaTek plans to use Llama 2, along with its APUs and NeuroPilot’s AI Platform to make a complete edge computing ecosystem with AI capabilities. This collaboration will allow usage of generative AI applications directly on the device as opposed to cloud computing.
YOUTUBE TO DEVELOP AI FRAMEWORK FOR THE PROTECTION OF MUSIC ARTISTS AND THEIR WORKS
YouTube plans to embrace the use of AI technology for creative expression while ensuring copyright protection of the artists and their works. In pursuit of this, YouTube plans to introduce the Music AI Incubator, while collaborating with their music partners, including Universal Music Group, for insights into generative AI experiments on YouTube. At the same time, YouTube plans to ensure the interests of its creative community through its rights management technology, Content ID and content policies for any AI-generated content.
CALIFORNIA AFFIRMS AI BILL OF RIGHTS
The Legislature of California passed a resolution on 23 August, 2023 affirming President Joe Biden’s AI Bill of Rights. This step adopts a human-centric approach and ensures safe and effective systems, algorithmic discrimination protections and data privacy and is a promise on part of the lawmakers to ensure that these principles are incorporated into the legislations and policies that they introduce.
