OPENAI LAUNCHES CHATGPT-4o

On 13 May, OpenAI introduced a new feature of ChatGPT-4, called ChatGPT-4o (where ‘o’ stands for “omni”), which combines text, audio, and image generation, irrespective of the combination of the input. With the introduction of this new free feature, ChatGPT can now carry out conversation fluently in 20 languages. GPT-4o was trained across a network of text, vision, and audio, to produce an AI system that can generate outputs through the same neural network. OpenAI intends to release the functionalities of this feature in iterations, starting with limited preset voice selections, to ensure implementation of post-training infrastructure.

UK’S MHRA STRATEGISES AI REGULATION AND LAUNCHES AI REGULATORY SANDBOX

On April 30, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the UK published a report on AI’s impact on Medical Products Regulation, in response to the UK Government’s white paper on government’s approach to regulating machine learning and artificial intelligence in the UK. While the MHRA accepted the pro-innovation approach taken by the UK government for AI regulation, it expressed its intention to regulate AIaMDs as medical devices, meaning they must meet the standard of medical device regulations in the UK The key issues identified by the Agency for AIaMD regulation include transparency, fairness and accountability.

On May 9, the MHRA announce its AI Airlock, an AI regulatory sandbox designed to assist in identifying key regulatory issues in AIaMDs, and the safe and secure deployment of medical devices that contain AI. The findings of this AI Airlock will influence UK regulations on AIaMDs.

OPENAI AND STACK OVERFLOW FORM A PARTNERSHIP

On May 6, OpenAI and Stack Overflow, an online platform for developers, have announced a partnership that aims to leverage the power of community-driven knowledge and state-of-the-art AI models to empower developers and advance AI development. The collaboration relies on a new API that makes use of Stack Overflow’s extensive library of well-tested code and solutions. With the help of this data, ChatGPT will be trained to become better at manage tasks involving programming more efficiently. However, several Stack Overflow users are voicing concerns about their information being utilized without their express permission to train AI models.

OPENAI JOINS COALITION FOR CONTENT PROVENANCE AND AUTHENTICITY (C2PA)

On May 6, OpenAI announced its collaboration with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) as a steering committee member. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) is a Joint Development Foundation project, formed through an alliance between companies such as Microsoft, Adobe etc. The primary aim of this project is to combat the spread of misinformation online by developing technological standards that would certify the source and credentials of any media content. The move aligns with ongoing efforts of OpenAI to improve transparency of provenance of  AI generated content. The company has already begun inserting content credentials in the images produced by DALL-E, and plans to extend this to other tools as well. Considering OpenAI’s size and capabilities, its membership fortifies the C2PA project and leads to an open and clear digital environment, allowing users to easily distinguish and make use of AI generated content with confidence.

ELON MUSK’S X LAUNCHES “STORIES”, AI POWERED NEWS

On May 4, Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) launched a new feature called “Stories” on the platform. The feature leverages the platform’s AI chatbot Grok and summarizes the topics trending on the platform. However, in contrast to traditional news articles, the feature would blend the breaking news and user discussions on the platform, building real time summaries. Currently, the feature is only available to premium subscribers of X. The above approach presents a unique perspective on current affairs. But there have been several concerns expressed regarding possible bias and false information since “Stories” is dependent on user-generated content.
